A long time ago while visiting her loving and gentle grandma, a wee toddler wearing her frilly lemon coloured dress tripped over her little white sandals and flew forward into nothing but air, before landing on her tiny soft palms and scuffing her tiny bare knees.  She froze in shock and then started to cry, looking up for grandma to come and rescue her.  Grandma immediately scooped her up and noticed a tiny drop of blood on the toddler’s knee and looked on in concern as her crying became screams.

Distraught, Grandma placed the toddler onto her knee and tried to console her. When there was no sign that the screaming would subside, grandma responded like most grandmas would and said; “Let’s go and find a treat, that will cheer you up, would you like one of grandma’s cookies, or what about a sweet from grandpa’s lolly jar”.

Immediately, her little granddaughter snuffled back her tears and nodded in approval indicating that yes that would make me feel better.  After reaching into the l...

Ek!  How do you get through Christmas and not gain a dress size!? It's all about giving yourself 'permission'!

Let's face it, with the abundance of celebration food and alcohol every where we look, it's easy for many of us to use Christmas as our once-a-year excuse to overindulge.  In fact, it's kind of an accepted and expected part of Christmas day.  Stuff yourself until you're so full that you fall asleep in the afternoon!  That wall we hit mid afternoon is often because we've driven our glucose levels so high at lunchtime, that when they come crashing down we feel sleepy and tired from what's called an 'insulin' hangover.  But, you can navigate the Christmas table differently and enjoy everything on offer if you follow my 5 tips!

1. Give yourself permission!

Don't make the foods you love taboo!  When we make the foods we love taboo, our mind tends to fixate more on them and after a glass of bubbles or two, it's very easy for our mi...

This is my basic nut milk technique, yet you can use either other nuts such as hazelnuts or almonds as well.

Thorough soaking is necessary to release the anti-nutrients found in the skin of nuts, that prevent proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.   Phytic acid binds minerals preventing them from being properly absorbed however by proper preparation and a little extra time you can 'activate' nuts and seeds reducing phytic acid and increasing nutrient availability.

This is a delicious beverage on it's own or as a smoothie base such as the Creme de Methe beverage!  You can view this video and download the recipe here.

I don't know about you, but I think chocolate and peppermint is a marriage made in heaven.
Add to this hazelnut nut milk, and it becomes a richly divine chocolatey treat, perfect for coughs and colds in winter when served hot, or it's cooling in summer when made with ice.

You can also change this versatile recipe to Jaffa by using orange oil instead of peppermint, or make a Hot Chilli Chocolate by omitting the peppermint with a pinch of cayenne pepper.

There’s no secret the world is facing a nutritional crisis of astounding proportion; quite literally our modern diet is killing us.  Today more people die of obesity than starvation, and the obese are also often malnourished.  This is a confusing time in human evolution.

Figuring out the optimal diet is a minefield and an often-emotive topic as so-called experts all claim to have the answer.  As one study seems to debunk another how can we truly trust constantly conflicting advice? You do not have to be a health expert to look around the globe to see that mainstream nutritional guidelines have led us down the wrong path.

And you don’t have to be an expert to use common sense – if the ‘supermarket diet’ is killing us, then don’t eat the standard ‘supermarket diet’.  Much of what we’ve been told about nutrition has been wrong and it’s time we all truly questioned why.

As you begin to understand food politics, you get a clear picture that nutritional advice is not based so much in sci...

Have you ever gazed at a child with admiration while they run around completely comfortable in their own skin? They never stop to question if they should hold their tummy in, or hide their body, they simply feel free with how and who they are. Oh the innocence of prepubescent youth!

As girls begin to develop, we begin the life long struggle of self-image and body-image. While we are all born loving our body unconditionally, as time goes on we begin to develop our human ego and with it arises the perils of ‘the body beautiful’.

According to Erik Erikson, our ‘ego identity is developed by human interaction and how an individual becomes more conscious of themselves and their surroundings.’ It is at this stage we begin to compare ourselves to others.

By the time we reach our teens our body is no longer something we love unconditionally, is can become the subject of harsh criticism and an object we judge rather than love.

Have you ever looked back at an old photo of yourself from 10, 20, 30...

Down here in the southern hemisphere, nothing tastes like Christmas more than a plump, deep red, sweet, succulent strawberry.  However, we may be serving up way more than we realise this Christmas!  We may be serving up a cocktail of toxic chemicals!  According to the USDA 99% of strawberries tested in 2014/2015 contained at least 1 detectable pesticide. 29% contained at least 10 and the worst contained 21.  These included nerve gas, carcinogens and a hormone disruptor known to damage the male reproductive system banned by the European Union due to its intense toxicity.

The great news is it’s easy to find spray free and/or organic strawberries at most farmers markets, and even most supermarkets stock frozen organic strawberries.

Here’s my low-carb, healthy-fat Raw Strawberry Cheesecake Recipe, so you can enjoy a guilt-free dessert this Christmas!  View Video here.
